Tierrajuana

Were we to pick a word to refer to Tijuana, the first one to come to mind would be dust. In Spanish we use “tierra” (earth) for dust, and also “polvo”. And then we need to specify how we refer to the dust blowing, moved by the wind or “lodazal”, moved by water. Tijuana, dusty, covered with dust, terrestrial, terrain, terrace, dirt road, and scorched and bumpy soil… Even on sunny days the skyline appears gray or gloomy. There is a layer of dust constantly moving over the soil as if the wind wanted to resurface it, constantly. If you place yourself on a hill you can perceive the dust and breathe it. The dryness of the air makes it hard to breathe… The dust adds density to the air keeping us from perceiving the lines that define the landscape, bringing to focus objects that appear close to us and blurring the rest. The excess of dust has generated a trade of “dusters” armed with a couple of flannel rags for a few cents. Tijuana, tierrajuana, tierra, cloud of dust, mud, dust hill, mobile, changing, volatile…

Si tuviera que asignarle una palabra, la primera que me viniera a la mente, diría tierra. No la tierra profunda, ámbito de las raíces… la que se mueve con el viento o con el agua y corre por la superficie modificándolo todo a su paso. Tijuana terregosa, enterregada, terrestre, terrena, terrón, terraplén, tierra quemada… El paisaje es gris, aún en los días soleados. Hay una capa de polvo que se eleva sobre la superficie como si fuera a dejarla movida por el ventarrón. Si te colocas en una colina puedes percibirla, respirarla. Su sequedad aletarga la respiración… es como una inmensa y desoladora capa nebulosa y gris que nos impide percibir las líneas del paisaje, permitiéndonos enfocar sólo los objetos cercanos y volviendo borroso el resto. Esa tierra ha generado un nuevo oficio, los desterradores, que con un par de trapos de franela te limpian el polvo del auto por unas monedas. Tijuana, tierrajuana, tierra, polvareda, barro, montículo de polvo, móvil, cambiante, volátil…
